The Italian and German customs authorities have seized eight Viagra tablets worth more than £1,000, officials said. The warning came after a study published in theArchives of Internal Medicinein January found that Viagra was the "most commonly prescribed" drug in Canada. In the study, researchers found that the drug could lead to a higher rate of blood clotting, which can be life-threatening.

The Canadian researchers also found that those who took Viagra were less likely to have a heart attack or stroke than those who took a placebo. In a study of more than 100,000 Canadian adults, the researchers said that the risk of stroke was higher for the people taking Viagra than for those taking placebo, with the highest risk being for those who took the drug.

"These findings are alarming because it would appear that the health Canada has been using the drug sildenafil for over two decades and is using it at much lower doses to treat ED, and in this way, the drug has now been approved to treat both conditions," the Canadian researchers wrote.

A spokeswoman for the Canadian researchers said that the results "do not mean that all patients who took Viagra were or become eligible for the drug" and that it would be "illegal to dispense or give Viagra to a patient who is a non-smoker."

The Canadian researchers also said that the company's decision to begin selling generic versions of sildenafil, which is similar to Pfizer's erectile dysfunction medication Viagra, "provides new hope to Canadians for a safe and effective treatment for their sexual health issues."
